Back in Barreirinhas we met Pablo who’s another touring cyclist! And a proper hardcore one, having been on the road for 20 months since setting off from New Mexico and making his was down through Central America and across to northern Brazil – there’s more info on his website: www.cycloamericanos.com

And in one of those ‘small world’ coincidences (which is ironic given the vast size of this continent that he’s pedalling across) it turns out that earlier in his trip Pablo spent some time cycling with an English guy called Dominic who’s also now riding across Brazil, and who I’ve been chatting with on Facebook since our routes crossed (although we didn’t meet) in Salvador. Back to the #SambaCycle and since the sand dunes Martin and I travelled through Humberto De Campos and Morros to reach Sao Luis, which is the capital and largest city of the state of Maranhao, but isn’t a World Cup host city.
In HdC, during the evening we were wandering around looking for a place to eat when outside the local hospital a guy asked if he could help and then promptly offered to drive us to the best churrascaria (BBQ restaurant) in town! He was called Makarth (a name inspired by his parents love of The Beatles!) and he’s a junior doctor who was 36 hours into a 48 hour shift (?!), on a break and hungry. His English was a little rusty but he persevered in order to chat with us as best he could and we enjoyed a lovely meal, despite Makarth’s football team Palmeiras going 0-2 down in the live game on TV at the same time! Then to top it all he insisted on picking up the bill. Top guy!
